Normally an Oxford, Mississippi resident wouldn’t give Alabama an A+ on anything, especially on a Saturday in the fall. But, in terms of calculus commitment, Alabama deserves top marks!
This past weekend I drove to Birmingham, Alabama to work with AP Calculus teachers as part of the A+ Alabama program. It is so energizing to work with a bunch of math teachers who have the same passion and commitment to their students and their subject. I was able to share my experience with them, go over parts of the new AP Calculus 2016-2017 framework, and have them work several circuits (which they LOVED). I learned a few cool things myself too, such as how to grab an intersection from the graph and store the value, and, to set my y-axis range from -0.1 to 0.1 when I am inspecting for zeros (instead of just repeatedly zooming in).
Here are a few pictures from the 2-Day Event:
8 am on a Saturday morning after driving all morning on Friday and participating in sessions from 12-5 on Friday… AND the coffee maker wasn’t finished percolating… But these teachers were ready to go!
This teacher spent a lot of time up out of her seat conferring with her neighbors. You know she’s an A+ teacher!
That’s all for now — gotta go teach some AP Calculus!
