When Will Our Culture Value Teachers?

Another academic season is upon us.  As students, parents, teachers and administrators get ready for school, others prepare for a different season: football season. In our culture, sports figures are much higher profile than educators.  Even so, a few in the sports world have recently paid homage to teachers.

Here is the recent Key & Peele ESPN Sports Center parody:

And here is what NFL Football coach Mike Leach said about the Patriots’ Deflate-gate:
“It’s kind of disturbing if you think about it,” Leach said. “With everything that’s going on, we’re worried about how much air goes into a ball when everybody uses their own ball. It’s not like it’s a forged football.  We waste a lot of time with that, and then we worry about the Kardashians. How can it be that we laugh about England’s obsession with the royal family? At least the royal family has college degrees and military service.”

Meanwhile, I am just wrapping up summer school and hearing in person and via email from parents  who really appreciate how I have helped their children gain mathematical confidence and skill.

Take the time to thank a teacher today!  It makes a huge difference!
