One of the many things I appreciate about the Math Medics is that they have a foundation through which they can award scholarships for both teachers and students. I have donated to this foundation at least once, maybe twice, which is pretty good because I only truly found out about the scope of what the Medics do in 2023. I have really enjoyed everything they offer their community, many of which are no-cost such as lesson plans and the AP Statistics mentorship program. I knew I wanted to replicate some of those things on a smaller scale to give back to our community (and to have a little fun).
This past June a confluence of events occured.
- Mark Kiraly and I both wore pink on a Wednesday (IYKYK) at the AP Calculus reading and I made someone take our picture.
- I figured out how to make a sticker from a photo on my iPhone.
- One of my colleagues made math stickers for me before, and I asked her how much it would cost to get stickers made so that I could sell them and put the proceeds towards a teacher scholarship. She said $1.50 each.
- Mark agreed to it.
I rented a P.O. Box for 3 months* and publicized the sticker sales within our AP Calculus community. To obtain n stickers, teachers send a check for $3n and a self-addressed stamped envelope to
Virge Cornelius
P.O. Box 81
Oxford MS
38655
For each sticker purchased, that teacher’s name will go into the raffle to win the “profit” from the sticker sales. So, if a teacher purchases n=10 stickers, their name will go into the hat 10 times.
To date we have sold 82 stickers so the scholarship fund is up to $123.
ALL OF THE FUN ENDS OCTOBER 15th. Make sure to order yours before then! Non-teachers can order stickers too, but the scholarship is only for teachers.
*An AP Calculus teacher sent me a check for $50 and said she didn’t want any stickers nor did she want the scholarship but she wanted to fund the project, so this paid for the P.O. Box. Thank you!
Mark and I are also leading an AP Calculus Mentorship program. The deadline to sign up is August 25th, 2024.
